A leather jacket from Ksubi was selling for double the price in 2024 compared to two years prior.

This is according to new data from eBay Australia and Deloitte Access Economics into the collectables market, which shows pre-loved fashion is the top-three most-common.

According to the data, Ksubi leather jackets have reported the largest percentage increase in value, rising from an average price of $60 in 2022 to $120 in 2024.

As well as Ksubi, the price of a Max Mara coat has lifted by 40 per cent since 2022, with its Teddy Bear Coat now selling for around $950.

A Louis Vuitton Speedy 30 is now selling for an average price of $1,100, up 30 per cent from 2022.

Handbags represent the most expensive pre-loved fashion items bought on eBay Australia, with a Hermès Birkin selling for $37,000 in 2014.

This is followed by the limited edition Bottega Veneta Tiina handbag which sold for $22,500 in 2014.

This year so far, the most expensive bag to sell was Louis Vuitton and Yayoi Kusama’s Watch Case 4 Trunk Monogram Canvas Pumpkin W/B Auth bag for $20,500.

Select outerwear (including a Ksubi leather jacket and Max Mara coat) showed strong average price growth since 2022 (100% and 40% respectively).

The positive price growth across all of the selected pre-loved fashion items suggests that pre-loved fashion is a strong category of interest among Australian buyers, according to eBay Australia and Deloitte.

eBay cited its Authenticity Guarantee service for eligible handbags as one of the reasons behind the platform's popularity as a marketplace for selling luxury handbags.

Overall, pre-loved fashion collectables were the third most-common collectable sold, coming at 26 per cent. This is behind toys at 33 per cent and coins at 34 per cent.

“Purchasing pre-loved fashion has become increasingly mainstream, with more buyers seeking out vintage luxury items and timeless wardrobe staples that truly stand the test of time,” eBay Australia’s fashion lead Anne-Marie Cheney said.

“The appeal lies not only in the uniqueness and quality of these pieces, but also in their lasting value, with many collectors now monetising their collections by reselling them on eBay. eBay Australia data shows that the average sale price of the highly-coveted Fendi Baguette has increased by 20 per cent over the past three years.

“When it comes to investing in a luxury designer handbag collection, eBay is a trusted platform and gives buyers confidence that they’re getting the real deal with our Authenticity Guarantee - just look for the blue tick.”

The second iteration of the report from eBay Australia and Deloitte Access Economics, estimates 7.6 million people or one in three adults (35 per cent) now actively participate in collecting.

As cost-of-living pressures continue, surveyed collectors who made a profit from selling collectables reported a median estimated profit of $13,000 in the past three years. By comparison, the 2023 report found that the estimated median profit was $5,000-$10,000 in the three years prior.

Collecting is booming, with an estimated 380 million collectable items owned nationwide.

When asked what top five factors will drive trends in the collectables market in the next five years, 7 per cent pointed to fashion, which came in at number five. This is behind sports (11 per cent), music (14 per cent), celebrities and influencers (28 per cent) and movies and TV (33 per cent).
