New research from body-positive fashion app Mys Tyler shows that the average Australian woman wears size 16.

The data was pooled from over 32,000 Mys Tyler users, which has been weighted to be representative of Australian women aged 18 to 75 as well as verified by global research firm Insights Exchange.

Other key data shows that over a third of Australian women (36.9 per cent) are considered ‘plus-size’ - or over size 18. Just over 80 per cent of women describe themselves as curvy or full-figured, while nearly two-thirds (66 per cent) wear a D cup or larger.

When it comes to dress size, only 9.1 per cent of Australian women are considered ‘straight-size’ - or from size 4 to 8, while more than half (53.9 per cent) are considered “mid-size” (size 10-16).

“With the release of this data, we want to highlight the disparity between the sizing of Australian women and what they’re being advertised and sold,” Mys Tyler founder Sarah Neill said. “We hope it acts as a wake-up call to the fashion industry and helps keep inclusion and diversity at the top of the agenda.”

The release of Mys Tyler Insights comes off the back of research conducted in 2022 which found that 81 per cent of women did not feel represented by fashion advertising, with size cited as the main reason.

“We know that women feel massively underrepresented by the fashion industry – not only can this have a negative impact on how women feel about their bodies, but it directly translates to an inefficient shopping experience, poor fit, and high return rates,” Neill said.

Mys Tyler is downloaded by more than 600,000 women. Its proprietary FIT Algorithm matches shoppers with fashion creators who have similar body shapes and sizes.

The app claims that 86 per cent of users are more body confident, and the return rate of purchase through Mys Tyler is much lower than the industry average at less than 5 per cent.
