Target Australia has signed on First Nations art collective Cungelella Art to create a limited-edition range of summer apparel.
Cungelella Art is headed up by four sisters Glenda McCulloch, Jaunita Doyle, Dale Bruce and Cheryl Perez. The sisters produce contemporary art, in addition to fashion and accessories through their fashion label Myrrdah.
The Target range includes matching family sleepwear, children’s swimwear and swim accessories. Each piece of the limited range includes printed artworks by Cungelella.
According to Target, the sisters guided the apparel team through different elements, incorporating family traditions and the importance of certain colours, markings and their meanings, while the apparel team worked on fit and style.
“The Target team are so proud of this collaboration with Cungelella art and the meaningful product we’ve been able to deliver with this partnership,” Target GM of merchandise Carrie Kirkman said.
“As one of Australia’s most loved brands, we have such a unique opportunity to reach families all around Australia and use our products to tell a story and create meaningful connections and support for Indigenous artists and businesses.
“We are so grateful for the sisters trusting Target to showcase their artwork and story.”
Cungelella co-founder Glenda McCulloch said the collaboration provides a platform for the collective.
“We are so excited to be working with Target, it’s a brand we have grown up with and now as adults we shop for ourselves and our children,” McCulloch said. “Our kids are a big part of our lives and we wanted to help create a range of products we would be proud to put our children in.
“This is such a special moment for us, knowing that we have a platform to share our story and bring a little piece of our home into homes across Australia.”
The new range will be sold in-store and online from today.
