KOT-J, a consignment atelier that has been selling curated fashion from its Newtown, Sydney showroom since 2018, has launched an online e-commerce platform amid expanded ranges.

The company now offers consignment on over 200 luxury labels, including Goyard, Louis Vuitton, Carol Christian Poell and Ziggy Chen.

Consignment is when a person gives permission to another party to take care of their property and retains full ownership of the property until the item is sold to the final buyer.

KOT-J creative director Matthew Preisz said the company simply has too many items to fit inside its showroom.

“Our consignors have blessed us with an abundance of pieces from the last 40 years of fashion history, and the online atelier allows us to provide each object with the space and context they deserve,” Preisz said.

“The online platform has been in the works for some time; we wanted it to reflect all the elements of our showroom that have resonated with our community. Key steps to replicate this extensive written and visual documentation that displayed a sense of joy: we wanted this sentiment to be a defining factor that translated from the physical to the digital space.”

Preisz said he and his team spent the last year extensively documenting, measuring, writing and researching each individual piece to prepare for the new online store.

“The launch of our online space gives us the opportunity to present editorial releases exclusive to our virtual platform,” he said. “Each drop will revolve around a designer or a design theme, with the visual language reflecting the collection’s sentiment.

“We want to maintain a sense of play and intertwine the revered and the irreverent, the old and the new.

“Keep an eye out every month for a new thematic drop: an exhibition of Hedi Slimane-era Dior, an avant-garde release rich in gothic texture, a nostalgia driven pop-culture odyssey, and secret collaborations with Australian designers are waiting in the wings. Our first collection has barely scratched the surface.”

As well as international labels, the atelier also manages Australian labels, including pieces from high-end designer label Song for the Mute.

Preisz said KOT-J has placed particular emphasis on Song for the Mute since the consignment atelier’s inception.

“We have a long history of working with them on their seasonal installations, campaigns and set design both in Australia and abroad in retailers such as Dover Street Market, H.Lorenzo and SKP.

“This insight has lent us a deep appreciation of the quality and storytelling woven into their garments.

“KOT-J has always showcased new, pre-owned, and sample pieces sourced from a devoted community of Song for the Mute followers in Sydney, leading it to become one of our most popular selections in the showroom.”
