The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) is calling on clarity around trading hours on September 22.
CEO Paul Zahra said it respects the decision of the Federal Government to honour the passing of Queen Elizabeth II with a one-off public holiday and that it’s now up to the states and territories to clarify trading conditions.
“Many in our community, including retailers and their staff, will want to honour and mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. We are confident retailers will abide respectfully by the government’s decision and in sympathy to the sensitivities of many of their customers.
“Nevertheless, this event will create some complications for businesses with store closures and staff scheduling challenges, with many rosters set up weeks in advance. There will also be a small but unexpected loss of trade, and additional staffing costs, which may impact cashflows for small businesses.
“Store opening and closing directions are typically established by the states and territories, and we look forward to their direction today so retailers can plan accordingly.”
Meanwhile, the National Retail Association (NRA) has accepted the Albanese Government’s announcement to honour the passing of Queen Elizabeth II with a one-off public holiday with the view that retail should operate under public holiday trade.
Manager for Member Engagement Victoria Hansen said businesses need to be able to service commemorators who want to pay their respects by getting out and about.
“The national day of mourning is an opportunity for the community to observe the loss of the Queen in its own way, which involves some retailers remaining open under public holiday trading regulations.
“Given the short notice of the holiday, store opening and closing directions determined by the states and territories should consider the complications for business, which must navigate a change in operating hours, staff scheduling and the impact on cashflow.
“However, we support the voluntary nature of work provisions, so businesses who wish to remain open can, and those who choose to close for the day can make other arrangements.”
