American-born second-hand retailer Savers is lifting its South Australian footprint to four stores this week.
Located at the brand-new Richmond Lifestyle Centre in Marleston, South Australia, the store will boast a floor space of 2,580 square metres. It is the fourth Savers store in South Australia and the first new store by the business in more than 10 years, addressing a gap in Adelaide’s western and inner-southern suburbs.
The Marleston store will offer over 100,000 pre-loved items across clothing, accessories, home goods, and other categories, with the majority of items priced under $10.
“The Marleston thrift superstore is the result of years of effort to find the perfect location to meet the needs of Adelaide’s growing western suburbs, and we’re excited to expand our ‘Thrift Proud’ movement in such a vibrant, developing area,” Savers Australia managing director Michael Fisher said.
“With an unbeatable range of sustainable and affordable shopping options, this new store is a celebration of thrift and its ability to make a positive impact on both the hip pockets, and the planet.”
The new store comes amid a surge in second-hand demand in Australia, with other thrifting retailers such as Uturn taking up new retail spaces across the country. Vinnies Victoria has also launched its first-ever e-commerce website.
A survey by Pureprofile and commissioned by Savers found that 85 per cent of South Australian consumers favour pre-loved items and almost eight in 10 (77 per cent) recognise the growing importance of sustainable fashion.
For Savers, the new opening follows key growth over the last 12 months, which included entering the New South Wales market for the first time – now with two stores in the state – with further store openings planned for 2025.
Alongside the new store opening, Savers has onboarded Wounds Australia – the national peak body for the prevention and treatment of chronic wounds – as its newest not-for-profit partner.
The not-for-profit joins Red Nose Australia and Diabetes Victoria. Savers will accept donations for the organisations.
According to Savers, the Marleston store will contribute to the over 7.5 million kilograms of textile waste diverted from landfill last year by the brand’s 14 existing Australian stores.
