Australian model Robyn Lawley has offered her support to a campaign against crocodile-skin farming.
Animal rights organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has recruited Lawley to narrate an animation on the practice.
Featuring an Australian crocodile named Sidney, the animation documents the character's journey on a crocodile farm.
“Australia’s crocodile-skin factory farms are butchering our native animals,” Lawley said. “For every bag, belt, or pair of shoes made with the skin of a crocodile, a highly intelligent and sensitive animal was held captive, lived in misery, and endured unimaginable suffering.”
Two-thirds of Australia's crocodile trade comes from the Northern Territory, and Australia accounts for around 60 per cent of the global trade in saltwater crocodile skins.
A 2017 report commissioned from Ernst & Young by the NT government estimated the crocodile farming industry was worth $106m to the territory’s economy.
Hermes and Louis Vuitton have been noted to invest in crocodile farms for high-end accessories and goods.
