Department store Myer has confirmed that 13 roles have been made redundant across its e-commerce and operations teams, with two further roles being redeployed amid a business assessment.

The confirmation comes following media reports that suggest redundancies were up to 50 across digital, IT and e-commerce, with further reports that the department store is offshoring these functions to India.

“As Myer’s online ecommerce business expands we have assessed our capacity and capability requirements to support future growth,” a Myer spokesperson said.

“The changes to the team will enable greater access and flexibility to specialist resources, which will allow us to meet growth and drive efficiency.

“The decision was not taken lightly and will result in a small number of employees leaving the business. We have been successful in redeploying some roles.”

Myer noted that where an alternate role was not able to be found, the business provided transition support to those affected and have paid full entitlements.

It added that there are no further plans to change any other roles.

The department store operates more than 50 stores across Australia, as well as a local e-commerce site.

For the first half of FY24, Myer recorded a total sales fall of 3 per cent to $1.82 million.

This was offset by a 0.1 per cent lift in comparable store sales, with CBD stores pushing up 0.8 per cent - minus the Brisbane CBD store closure last year.

Sales improved in the second half, with total sales up 2 per cent for the first six weeks of 2024, and comparable sales up 4.9 per cent.
