Australian Fashion Laureate winner and respected editor Laura Brown has taken on a new role after her exit from InStyle.

Brown has been appointed to travel platform Exceptional Alien, a year after leaving her InStyle position in the United States. She has also onboarded as an investor for the venture.

Brown is expected to use her global influence to recruit high-profile creators and creatives to Exceptional Alien, offering recommendations on travel destinations.

“During my time in fashion media, I’ve travelled relentlessly and collaborated with some of the most celebrated talents in the world,” Brown said. “My Notes app has always been packed with snippets and recommendations from people in the industry – from the best hidden bar in Lisbon to a hacienda in Oaxaca, Mexico.”

Brown said she had a personal connection with the name Exceptional Alien.

“As an Aussie working in the US for more than 20 years, I've applied for visas and had to prove that I was an ‘alien of exceptional ability’ in my creative industry so many times,” Brown said.

“That’s where the community of Exceptional Alien comes from – global creators who share their home cities and destinations through their unique lens.”

As well as being editor-at-large, Brown plans to create her own travel playbooks.

Exceptional Alien cofounder and CEO Justin Drape welcomed Brown to the team.

“Laura Brown is the personification of an exceptional alien,” Drape said. “Her ambition and courage propelled her to move away from a place and people she loves to pursue her craft and become exceptional at what she does.

“Her story and achievements are inspiring, and her unique style and lens on life means you can always trust her recommendations for a destination.”
