WeWearAustralian has teamed up with Thread Together in a bid to raise clothing donations for those affected by the fires that are ravaging Los Angeles.

The pair are calling on Australian fashion brands, alongside US brands, to donate excess stock which will then be redistributed to those affected by the fires affecting the Palisades and Eaton regions.

Speaking with Ragtrader, WeWearAustralian co-founder Kelly Atkinson said she and her business partner Richard Poulson initiated the donation drive as the fires affected many of her close friends.

“Most people don’t know, but I actually spent 10 years living in Brentwood and the Pacific Palisades – hence, sadly, I have had many friends who this devastation has impacted,” Atkinson said.

WeWearAustralian was originally launched in 2020 to support the Australian fashion industry during the pandemic, continuing as a support organisation since through its Showroom X platform.

“At #WeWearAustralian, community is woven into everything we do," Atkinson continued. "Whether at home or abroad, we believe in standing together when it matters most.

“In partnership with Thread Together and with on-the-ground support from the Assistance League of Los Angeles, we are coordinating urgent donations of essential clothing and supplies.”

Key items being sought include everyday clothing and footwear for men, women and children, including t-shirts, underwear, socks, sleepwear, track pants, shorts and jumpers.

“Recovery doesn’t end with rescue. Sorting, packing, and redistributing these crucial donations will continue long after the flames are gone,” Atkinson continued.

“Our partnerships are initiated to ensure that support extends beyond immediate aid, fostering resilience and sustainable rebuilding for the affected communities.

“Taking the lead from [CEO] Anthony Chesler and the team at Thread Together, we are actioning what we can with their experience and our industry reach, we are as always, Better Together.”

Chesler confirmed that brands in Australia and the United States have started to reach out and offer support.

“It’s heartening to see the fashion community come together so quickly in times of crisis, and we’re hopeful that many more will join us in providing critical relief to those in need,” Chesler said.

Chesler added that the goal is to provide immediate relief and long-term support during the restoration phase. While it is too early to confirm exact amounts of clothing needed, he anticipates this being at least one hundred thousand units.

“The most urgent items needed are everyday essentials for men, women, and children. Highest priority items include underwear, socks, sleepwear, t-shirts, track pants, jumpers, and footwear,” Chesler said.

“These are the items that will make the biggest impact right now, providing those whose lives have been devastated with the comfort and dignity they desperately need as they begin to rebuild their lives.”

Brands and retailers wishing to donate clothing items can fill out a form, which can be found in a post on Thread Together's LinkedIn profile.
