Big W has recorded a 2.5% sales increase to $890 million for the fiscal first quarter.

Comparable sales for the period also increased by 2.9% on the previous year.

The company said its relaunched Image Line program, which offers basics at low prices, was key to the result.

"While it is still early days in our turnaround joureny, the first key element in one plan was to regain price trust with our customers.

"Consistent with our expectations, growth has been led by an improvement in customer transactions and items per basket driven by price investment and clearance activity."

The discount department store ended the year with 186 locations, with 184 now having traffic counters.
