Department store David Jones has launched its annual Flower Show this week at its Elizabeth Street flagship, with this year’s arrangements involving First Nations inter-disciplinary artist and Bundjalung woman Kylie Caldwell.

Caldwell collaborated with three Sydney florists, including Seedflora by George Low, My Violet and Bess Paddington to design pieces for the event, which covers 20 floral installations across three levels of the flagship store, utilising over 200,000 blooms and more than 50 species of flowers and foliage.

Caldwell is an experienced weaver and fibre artist, who aims to revive traditional Bundjalung cultural practices.

"I am truly thrilled to be part of this year’s David Jones Spring Flower Show,” Caldwell said. “This has been a significant and exciting undertaking for me, involving an extensive array of woven pieces alongside my painted and digital art elements.

“My passion for flowers and plants runs deep, rooted in my childhood experiences with my Aunty Bridie, who spent countless hours in the garden and made weekly trips to the nursery.

“Her influence on me has been profound, and I wish she could see this moment. I eagerly anticipate seeing how all the elements come together—blending design with floristry in what promises to be an extraordinary showcase."

The Flower Show will also feature contributions from local and international brands including Gucci, Chloe, Dinosaur Designs, In The Round House, and Jo Malone.

“The David Jones 2024 Spring Flower Show will be a vibrant celebration of our unique and diverse culture, deeply inspired by the art of the traditional owners of our land,” David Jones regional manager Jason James said.

“Australia’s flora is unparalleled, with its colours, shapes and textures as distinct as the people who cultivate them. Our customers can look forward to a stunning fusion of Australian native florals, colourful locally grown blooms, and exotic imports, all reflecting the rich tapestry of modern Australia.”

The Spring Flower Show at David Jones in Sydney CBD is now open until September 15.
