Australian biotech firm Nanollose has secured its first-ever pilot production of a finished consumer good, in collaboration with Tasmania textile manufacturer Waverley Mills.
Nanollose provided 50 kilograms of its proprietary Nullarbor-20 fibre which was blended with Australian merino wool to create a yarn consisting of 30 per cent Nullarbor-20 and 70 per cent wool.
This resulted in the production of around 70 blankets, following a dyeing and weaving process.
While Nullarbor has previously been blended with a variety of fibres, including cotton and polyester, this product represents the first time Nullarbor has been blended with wool. The product was made using existing equipment.
Executive chairman Dr Wayne Best said it is fitting that its first pilot production of a finished consumer good was achieved in collaboration with a leading woollen mill in Australia.
“This has led to a unique blend of traditional merino wool with Nanollose’s state of the art Nullarbor fibre,” Dr Best said. “The outcome demonstrates the considerable versatility of our Nullarbor fibres within the textile industry, as well as its seamless fit with existing manufacturing facilities, while also expanding the potential commercial applications.
“We look forward to providing more updates as our existing developments with both domestic and international partners continue to advance.”
Waverley Mills is a flagship Australian wool brand which has been crafting textiles in Tasmania for 150 years. It is the only mill of its kind in Australia that takes raw fibre and transforms it into finished goods entirely onsite.
“As Australia's only fully operational woollen mill, we take pride in leading the way in sustainable textile innovation,” Waverley Mills executive chair Fran Maiale said. “Our recycling process enables us to blend wool with other natural fibres.
“Once spun, the yarn is dyed, woven, and finished entirely on-site in Launceston, Tasmania. The Waverley Mills team has successfully collaborated with the Nanollose team to blend Nullarbor yarn with 100 per cent virgin wool, resulting in the production of these innovative blankets.”
