Amazon Australia has firmed its commitment to the Australian market, opening a new robotics fulfilment centre (FC) in Western Sydney.
The FC is the largest warehouse in Australia and has the capacity to store 20 million items.
The site creates over 1,500 ongoing jobs including customer fulfilment roles and IT and engineering positions.
Across every state and territory, Amazon Australia employs more than 5,000 people.
"It’s been just over four years since Amazon’s Australian retail store opened for business, and more than 10 years since Amazon Web Services first arrived on our shores," Amazon said in a statement.
"Each year, we work hard to deliver for customers and partners, aiming to become one of Australia’s most trusted brands and one of its best employers," the eTailer said.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who attended the opening of the site, said that 4,000 construction workers used 13,500 tonnes of Australian steel to construct the mega-warehouse.
"We wanted to see large companies like Amazon decide that they wanted to come and invest right here and create the opportunities," Morrison said.
"What you see is the infrastructure of a new economy, bringing some 11,000 small businesses together and giving them the opportunity to connect to customers right across Australia, but indeed well beyond to other parts of the world," he said.
The new FC forms part of Amazon's commitment to the Australian market, which has seen it invest over $5.3 billion across its businesses here since launch.
This investment includes building other FC and logistics sites in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, the Gold Cost and Newcastle to store and ship products, as well as data centres and corporate offices to support businesses with cloud computing.
Additionally, the eTailer has invested in three green energy projects in Australia: the Hawkesdale Wind Farm in Victoria; the Gunnedah Solar Farm in New South Wales; and, the Suntop Solar Farm in New South Wales.
These projects will assist the business achieve its goal of powering its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025 – five years ahead of its original target of 2030.
The business is also on a mission to reach net-zero carbon by 2040 – 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement.
The new FC is located in Kemps Creek in NSW.
