Akubra has renewed its manufacturing contract with the Australian Defence Force, continuing its century-long connection with the armed forces.
For more than 100 years, the Australian-owned hatmaker has produced more than two million slouch hats. Akubra became the exclusive manufacturer of slouch hats in 2015.
The deal follows the purchase of Akubra by Andrew and Nicola Forrest’s private investment group Tattarang last November.
Dr Andrew Forrest AO said the company is proud to continue the local manufacturing of an important and practical piece of Australia’s national identity.
“The slouch hat is a source of national courage and pride with a history that is deeply engrained in Australian families, including my own,” Dr Forrest said.
“My family has lost sons in all the great wars since the Boer War and the slouch hat, made by Australians for Australians, has a special place in our hearts.
“A national symbol should be made in Australia, and I am proud that Akubra will continue to manufacture the slouch on Australian soil.”
Nicola Forrest AO said the renewed contract is a positive outcome not just for Akubra but for Australian manufacturing.
“For almost 150 years, Akubra has prioritised high-quality materials and Australian craftsmanship, ensuring that all Australians, from our farmers to our armed forces, can wear a hat that is comfortable but also stands the test of time,” Mrs Forrest said.
“The slouch hat is a national icon that portrays a rich tradition of respect and originality that we will proudly continue through crafting it here in Australia, by Australian hands.”
The new agreement accounts for up to 25,000 slouch hats.
Akubra will manufacture the hats at its workshop in Kempsey, New South Wales, where it has been operating since 1974.
