Australian hatmaker Akubra will relaunch a 2008 design in collaboration with Queensland country music artist Lee Kernaghan ahead of its retail opening in Brisbane.

The ‘Outback Club’ hat was designed and launched 17 years ago to celebrate Kernaghan being named Australian of the Year after a serendipitous visit to Akubra’s workshop. The hat shares its name with Lee’s hit song, The Outback Club.

As part of the relaunch, Akubra will exclusively debut 600 ‘Outback Club’ hats at the brand’s new Brisbane pop-up store which opens on March 28.

Akubra CEO Natalie Culina said the collaboration honours the enduring partnership between Akubra and country music icon Lee Kernaghan.

“I can’t think of a more fitting symbol of the Australian spirit than the ‘Outback Club’ hat – a celebration of Akubra’s legacy and the essence of Lee’s music, both of which have resonated with Aussies for decades,” Culina said.

“I’m excited for fans and hat enthusiasts to carry a piece of Lee’s legacy that’s been handcrafted in regional Australia.”

Since its initial launch in 2008, the ‘Outback Club’ hat has since become a signature part of Kernaghan’s look, worn in countless performances, public appearances, and album covers.

The store launch in Brisbane will feature the country music signer on opening night, with the public asked to register their interest on the Akubra website.

“Akubra is more than just a hat – it’s a symbol of Australia’s spirit, resilience, and connection to the land,” Kernaghan said.

“Akubra has been woven into Australia’s history for over a century, and to be part of that legacy is something truly special, it stands for quality, tradition, and mateship – all values I hold close.

“Whether it’s through my music, my travels, or meeting people along the way, I love seeing how much this brand means to Aussies from all walks of life.”
