Big W has taken to social media to give Aussies a short history lesson on its name following a viral TikTok video.
The retailer has explained that the W in Big W does in fact stand for Woolworths, after Aussie TikTokkers 'Murphtox' and 'TobyRozario' posted about it, generating nearly 500,000 views across three videos.
"The Big W name originated in 1964 with the opening of our first store in the Jesmond Shopping Centre, Newcastle," the retailer said in a LinkedIn post.
"This was also the first shopping centre Woolworths developed, with the Big W name reflecting the close relationship we have with Woolworths Supermarkets.
"The original Big W stores were department stores, similar to Myer and Grace Bros, and reflected Woolworths’ foundation in the general merchandise/variety business.
"The first Big W ‘discount department store’ in the successful store format that we know and love these days opened in Tamworth in 1976," Big W said.
Today, Big W operates 179 stores and employs 20,000 team members across Australia, Hong Kong and Bangladesh.
The business' parent organisation is Woolworths Group.
