UK-based fashion resale app Depop has announced the expansion of its business to Australia.
Australia is Depop's third largest market and launches here as part of its ongoing global expansion.
Expanding to Australia, the business hopes to capitalise on the opportunity to grow the app's 16 million registered worldwide users – 90% of which are under the age of 26.
Depop AU country manager Aria Wigneswaran said that the business is excited to welcome new Australian users to the app.
"Depop was created as a place for the next generation to buy, sell and get inspired.
"Depop exists so that millions of young, emerging creatives can build a brand and make money doing what they love.
"We want to empower our community to transform fashion, and by empowering them, we’re enabling a more accessible, diverse and creative industry – and one that’s less wasteful.
"As our community in Australia grows, we’re excited for the new adopters of Depop to uncover the original inventory, style and aesthetic hailing from our local op shops, independent brands, to wardrobes across the nation, and source inspiration from the millions of users throughout the world," she said.
The app has cultivated a strong Gen Z following by connecting with them through the familiarity of social media combined with the mechanics of a resale marketplace.
Currently there are 19 million items for sale on the app, with up to 140,000 new items listed every day.
In Australia, Depop saw a 90% increase in sales between Q4 2018 to Q4 2019.
