NATIONAL: Big W has been forced to recall a range of children's sleepwear after revelations it has been incorrectly labelled as low fire danger.

Checks carried out by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) revealed the sleepwear failed the mandatory fabric flammability requirements that must be met to carry the 'low fire danger' tag.

Big W parent company Woolworths Limited has issued a voluntary recall of the 27 styles affected by the error. They include 19 styles in the Pink Sugar and Bed Bugs Girls Single Nighties range and eight in the Sleepwear Nite Club Boys Nightwear range.

The garments have also been withdrawn from sale.

Advertisements for the recall have appeared in newspapers, in store and online. Woolworths has confirmed they will offer a full refund to any customers that return the mislabelled products to a Big W store.

Deputy chair of the ACCC, Peter Kell, said the commission was not aware of the garments being involved in any accidents or injuries to date.

"While parents and carers must always take care to ensure children are kept away from fire hazards, accidents can occur. That is why it is crucial to know that the nightwear they are buying will minimise flammability in the event of a fire," said Kell.

"Since becoming aware of test results that so far seem to confirm the ACCC's view, I am pleased to see Woolworths has acted promptly by withdrawing these garments from sale and instigating a voluntary recall."
