The Mari Funaki Award for Contemporary Jewellery is getting closer to finding a winner.

Thirty-five artists have been shortlisted from an international field of 413 entries from 48 countries.

The winners will be announced August 23.

The Award is a biennial event that showcases excellence in international and Australian contemporary jewellery. 

It was established in 2014 to mark the life and achievements of Japanese/Australian artist and gallery founder Mari Funaki.

It also provides a forum for emerging artist to show their work alongside highly celebrated established artists.

The Award offers prizes in two categories: an $8000 acquisitive prize awarded to an established artist, and a $2000 cash prize awarded to an emerging artist.

The winning piece by an established maker will enter the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees.

The winners will be announced alongside a curated exhibition including Blanche Tilden (Australia), Céline Sylvestre (France), David Bielander (Switzerland/Germany), Doris Betz (Germany), Dovile Bernadisiute (Lithuania), Ela Bauer (Netherlands) and Emi Fukuda (Japan).

The judges for the 2016 Award are: Simone LeAmon, Catherine Truman and Kate Rhodes.
