The Sussan Group has withdrawn its flagship brand from the New Zealand retail market.

Six Sussan stores will close and nine will be rebranded to Suzanne Grae under the restructure, which is expected to be complete by August 2012.

This will see the number of Suzanne Grae stores in New Zealand increase from 11 to 20 stores.

Sussan chief executive Colleen Callander said Sussan sales continued to struggle in the market, while its sister brand showed growth potential.

"This will create a more sustainable business than is currently operating with resources spread across two brands. It was felt that the New Zealand market would be best served by expanding Suzanne Grae.

"Like any major retailer, we constantly review our store portfolio across the Group to make sure we provide the best service to our customers whilst ensuring long term sustainability for all our brands."

Sussan staff will be redeployed into the nine rebranded stores or provided with full redundancies and associated benefits. The group operates 550 stores across three brands, including Sportsgirl, across Australia and New Zealand.

"Sussan is currently rebuilding its online capability and we expect our New Zealand customers to be able to continue to purchase Sussan products online from the middle of next year," Ms. Callander said.

Customers will have until August 2012 to redeem VIP points and gift vouchers.
