The second-annual National Indigenous Fashion Awards (NIFA) are open for nominations.
The awards program, which was launched in 2020, celebrates the innovation, diversity and ethical practices of Australia’s First Nations peoples in fashion and textiles.
The program highlights excellence across six categories, and in 2020 awarded Peggy Griffiths, Kieren Karritpul, Maara Collective X Bula’bula Arts, Ninti One, Bede Tungutaalum and Julie Shaw with an inaugural accolade.
Excitingly, NIFA will make its debut as a physical event this year alongside the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair and Country to Couture showcases in August in the NT.
For those who can't make the physcial event, the ceremony will be broadcasted via NITV once again.
"The award ceremony is a unique opportunity for the Australian and international fashion community to connect to the world’s oldest living cultures," the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation (DAAFF) said in a statement.
The NIFA categories are listed below:
- Cultural Adornment and Wearable Art Award
- Textile Design Award
- Fashion Design Award
- Social and Environmental Contribution Award
- Community Collaboration Award
- Special Recognition Award
Nominations are open now until close of business Monday 31 May 2021, with shortlisted nominees notified in June.
Nominations can be made via the NIFA and DAAFF websites.
