Recently announced 'face of Oscar Wylee,' interior designer Josh Jessup has cut ties with the brand following the Federal Court case against the eyewear brand.

Oscar Wylee has been ordered to pay a $3.5 million fine following misleading claims made about its charitable activities between 2014 and 2018.

Jessup was announced as the face of the business on September 16 on the Oscar Wylee Facebook and Instagram accounts, before the news of the Federal Court case hit the media.

Following this news, Jessup posted to his Instagram story to say that he had cut ties with the brand as it didn't align with his views.

"Some of you may have heard about the charity fraud Oscar Wylee has been involved in," Jessup posted to his story.

"I was announced as the face of the company before this came to light.

"I have now cut ties with the company and will not be involved with Oscar Wylee.

"I believe it's important to align myself with brands that I believe in and reflect my values so this was an easy decision to make.

"Thanks for all your support," he wrote.

Further on his Facebook page, Jessup said there has been no apology from the brand following the news.

"Since then [the news of the case] there has been no apology from them and they have left me to deal with the backlash.

"So just making it as official as possible that I have cut ties with the company," he said.

At time of writing (23 September), the announcement of Jessup as the new face of the brand and the accompanying picture of him is still up on the Oscar Wylee socials, despite Jessup's distancing from them.

Speaking to Ragtrader, Jessup said that he is confused as to why this image is still live.

"As for why my image is still up, I'm a bit confused as I've made it quite clear I have cut ties with the company and have reached out to them.

"I just hope they end up doing what's right and I can be distanced from this situation and partner with companies that make the world a better place," he said.

Following the case, Oscar Wylee has worked to rectify its actions and has donated over 300,000 pairs of glasses, the business said in a statement.

"Oscar Wylee has taken corrective action in response to the court action and in line with our ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility.

"We have donated 336,585 pairs of glasses frames and $80,000 cash donations to charities supporting eyecare for the disadvantaged.

"We have also adopted a strict Trade Practices Compliance Policy, directed to the protection of consumers, and appointed a Compliance Officer responsible for its implementation.

"Oscar Wylee acknowledges the importance of the issues raised by the ACCC and sincerely regrets the contraventions of the Australian Consumer Law (ACL)," the business said.

As part of its penalty, the business is required to publish a corrective notice explaining its breaches of the Australian Consumer Law on its website homepage, Instagram and Facebook pages within 30 days of the judgement.

Oscar Wylee was contacted for comment regarding the situation with Jessup, but did not wish to make a comment.
