Apparel manufacturer Gildan Brands has officially launched the first Nationally Accredited Printing Course following a successful pilot earlier this year, in conjunction with TAFE NSW.

The new course, commencing in late February 2023, is designed to provide practical and theoretical skills required for printing on apparel, and will be delivered through a combination of both face-to-face and online learning.

“This new course is designed to open the door for many aspiring individuals who want to join the industry – gaining invaluable expertise in basic design/file preparation, traditional screen printing and digital direct to garment,” Gildan Brands Australia GM David Hillen said.

“Apparel decorating roles are in demand across Australia, and for many, it’s hard to find a course that teaches both the right skills in both digital and traditional screen-printing.”

The initial qualification from the course can be used as a pathway into a range of specialist Certificate III qualifications within the printing and graphic arts space. It is designed for those who are starting out or seeking work within print or related industries.

This nationally recognised course comprises 12 competencies designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to perform a range of tasks, including learning to work with Adobe programs and the latest digital machinery, such as direct-to-garment printing and dye sublimation printing devices.

TAFE NSW Ultimo head teacher of printing Craig Rollins (pictured right) said TAFE NSW is committed to investing in infrastructure to address in-demand skills across the state.

“Collaborating with Gildan Brands has provided a golden opportunity for individuals to upskill and get a qualification in an industry that is continually growing and evolving,” he said.

“The printing industry in Australia is worth $8 billion, and over 4,500 printing businesses are in operation. However, technology is driving digital advancements in our industry too at a rapid pace.”

Hillen added that the shift from traditional to digital print means there is a need for new ways of thinking and a demand for adaptable printers.

“Screen-Printing is a process that can print on almost anything and has become an in-demand skill across Australia,” Hillen said.

“We are excited to be working with TAFE NSW to provide students with a newly accredited printing course that will ensure they stay at the forefront of printing innovation.”

Alongside its collaboration with TAFE NSW, Gildan Brands has been building and developing the next stage of the Gildan Printing Academy, which it said will bring new job and learning opportunities nationwide.

Gildan Brands is currently seeking expressions of interest for its new course and will release specific course details in the coming weeks.
