Australian label Elk has this week joined international organisation, 1% for the Planet.
The organisation encourages brands to donate 1% of their annual sales or salary to environmental causes, with its member base spanning a global network of businesses, individuals and non-profits.
Elk co-founder and creative director Marnie Goding said the move formalises the business' mission.
"Protecting our environment and giving back to create positive change are core values for Elk.
"Joining 1% for the Planet is a formal commitment to progressing our journey towards better products and better business," she said.
The milestone moment for the business helps to define its giving focus around three core values:
- Environment: Support activities and organisations working to reduce environmental impact
- Empowering women: Support women, so that they, in turn, can support their families and communities
- Local Community: Support local, grassroots charitable activities and organisations
Additionally, the membership gives Elk access to a community of authenticated and like-minded environmental non-profit organisations for the business to align with and create meaningful positive change through collective action.
In committing to donate the equivalent of 1% of gross sales to verified, 1% for the Planet partner non-profits, Elk is supporting a global movement addressing pressing environmental issues.
1% for the Planet was founded in 2002 to prevent greenwashing and to certify reputable giving and provide accountability.
The 1% for the Planet certification is given to businesses and individuals who meet the high-bar commitment of donating 1% of annual sales or salary to environmental causes.
