Amazon Australia is set to open up its first Queensland-based fulfilment centre (FC) in Brisbane.

The centre is scheduled to have operations going by Christmas this year and will enable faster delivery times for Amazon customers in the state.

The site will provide about 200 local jobs to Queenslanders while works on the new facility will support more than 170 construction jobs over the development and fit-out phase.

The FC will be the size of two rugby fields and will house more than half a million items.

The announcement comes as state governments invest heavily in development and construction projects to help ease the economic blow dealt by COVID-19.

Amazon Australia director of operations Craig Fuller said that the business is excited to launch an FC in Queensland.

"We are committed to improving delivery promises for our customers, and building infrastructure closer to where our customers and sellers live enables us to do this, while reducing our environmental impact.

"This significant investment will benefit Queensland customers and small to medium size businesses and support the local economy.

"Our Brisbane fulfilment centre will build on our capability to support Queenslanders, whilst providing around 200 job opportunities for local workers in a safe work environment, with competitive pay.

"Furthermore, we are dedicated to enriching and giving back to the communities in which we operate and we look forward to working with the Council, surrounding schools and local community groups to create impactful community programs," he said.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said that she was thrilled to see Amazon supporting the recovery of Queensland.

"We are 100% focused on getting Queensland working again and that’s why I’ve directed my Ministers to fast-track projects that will create jobs for Queenslanders as part of our Unite and Recover for Queensland Jobs plan.
